The History of St. John Lutheran

South Euclid, Ohio 44121

The first German families arrived in the Village of Cleveland in 1830 settling on Superior and Lorain Avenues. In 1843, Zion Church was formed and joined the Missouri Synod. They began meeting in Concert Hall on Superior. In 1851 Rev. Heinrich C. Schwan was called from Missouri to pastor the church. Schwan held mission services in the southern part of Euclid Township at the crossroads settlement now known as South Euclid. In 1853 the first St. John Lutheran Church, SE was built by it’s members.
